Nathan Goebel
Richland Community College

Nathan Goebel describes his role as a student trustee as being "the student face of Richland." As the liaison between the students and the board, he regularly attended Student Senate and club meetings to gather input about student concerns and to share information about board decisions. He also held forums on Richland's smoking policies and secured funding to build smoking shelters on campus. A featured speaker at graduation and the college's 30th anniversary luncheon, he organized a "Candidate's Day" prior to the November 2002 election, where he recalls that "my greatest pleasure was dressing up like Uncle Sam and meeting and greeting both the candidates and the students."

"While community college was not the route that I had originally planned, the hidden potential that I found during my two short years at Richland has given me the tools I need to transfer to my original school of choice, the University of Illinois," says Goebel. "Through my work I know that I have been an essential part of the board and hope to serve Richland for many years to come."
