ICCTA Gigi Campbell

Student Trustee Excellence Award
2001 Recipient

David Moore
Parkland College

Why would someone choose to be a student trustee?

"During my time at Parkland, I saw firsthand students who had lived a life of asphyxiating poverty, defying odds, and making courageous steps to achieve a life and future for themselves that they had never known," says David Moore. "I desperately wanted every one of them to reach their goals and inspire others with a similar plight. I knew there had to be something that someone in the position of student trustee could do to help them."

To that end, Moore successfully collaborated with local public transportation officials to make the purchase of discounted bus passes available on campus. He initiated an auction web site where Parkland College students can buy, sell and trade used textbooks. In addition, he championed the creation of Parkland scholarships for international students, who are ineligible for state or federal financial aid.

During his year as student trustee, Moore also participated in ICCTA's Lobby Days in Springfield and Washington, D.C., bringing student concerns and perspectives to the attention of lawmakers.
